Bangkok or Not

The entry below is a synopsis of our speakers talk on 15th March 2023.

A very interesting presentation was given by Ray Calboutin at the latest meeting of the Cullercoats Men’s Club.

His visit to Bangkok in 2007 was a stop off on his way to Sydney, where his son was living. Bangkok was a surprise to him as the city had lots of good hotels (multi story) but they were surrounded by very poor housing which the locals lived in little more than tin huts. He went on to relate his visit to the "Golden Mount" and the background of its building, problems with the constrictions, many photos of the mount and the "Temple of the Big Buddha" .

Ray then went on to relate the visit to the "Grand Palace" complex which was exquisite in the amount of gold, coloured tiles and multi roof temples. The story of when and why the complex was constructed and the do's and don'ts were outlined, photos of many Temples (giving each their function) and the Palaces with the surrounding gardens were shown all of which was to demonstrate the reverence that the people have for their religion also the King and Queen .

A very good morning for all our members who thoroughly enjoyed the presentation.

Questions followed on several points to conclude the presentation.
